This project, which enjoys a truly spectacular view of lower Manhattan, used two
Renlita Series 2000 Doors in a very unique application.
A door assembly is located at each end of the long, linear apartment to screen the master and guest bedroom. The assembly consists of a single overhead door with a flanking swing door.
Crittall Steel Windows, using the W-20 model, were inserted into the Renlita frames to produce multiple glass lights with extremely narrow muntins. In addition, Crittall’s signature ‘Fenestra Joint’ was incorporated, producing a classic and elegant aesthetic.
The architect wished to finish the metal with the look of Cor-Ten steel, which has the look of rusted metal. In order to achieve this finish, a rust oxidizer from Metal Finishes Plus was used. Their line of steel finishes, metallic coatings, rust oxidizers and patinas are a cost effective and user friendly solution for custom metal finishes. The ‘Auburn Rust’ finish was used for this project.
The finishing process is surprisingly easy.
The area to be treated must first be cleaned down to bare steel and wiped free of all dirt and oils. When the metal is clean, the product is sprayed on. The finish development time varies according to the level of rust desired, ranging from a matter minutes to one or two days. Once the desired rust color is reached, the solution is rinsed off, neutralized, dried and sealed.
These photos were taken prior to and during the installation process. Because the counterweight covers have not yet been installed the operating track, cam arm and other system details are clearly seen.
The client and architect are very happy with the result and have asked Renlita to produce additional items for the space. It is expected they will be installed in late August 2111, and the photos will be posted on this site.
